Newbie bushhog gear oil Q

I have a question regarding the gear oil on my Bushhog SQ600. The manual says to 'check oil level by removing oil level check plug on the side of the gearbox'. I do not see a checkplug on the side - there is a plug on the top - is that what they mean? The diagram seems to point to this as well. Oil level should be up to the hole, that is, the box should be full to the top?

I have an older Bush Hog model SQ60R. The gear box has a sloping face on the back of it with a plug in the middle of it. I fill to the bottom of the plug which puts the fill level at about center line of the input shaft. I don't think that you should completely fill any gear box because of heat expansion. Hope this helps but your gear box may be of a different design. ....

Not all the way to the top. Leave the last 25% or 30% air space to allow for expansion of the oil during operation. Oil will expand about 10% beyond its orginal ambient temp. volume. Not allow enough air space for expansion can result in seals leaking or being blow or damaged. ....

Thanks for the quick replies. My gearbox is a cube. The plug I found is on the top at one of the corners. There must be something else they're referring to - the manual says "Add EP80W90 gear oil if necessary to bring oil level to check plug hole." That can't be the top if we're to allow for expansion. So I'll have to look it over again. Maybe I missed it...

Ok, I think I've got it. There _is_ a plug on the side - about 1/3 from the bottom near the 'squealing pig'. It is an allen screw and as I loosened it oil started coming out so I think there's plenty. The plug on the top must be for filling - I can't imagine trying to get oil in this thing from the side ;)

Anyhow, mystery solved. Thanks all!
